The surprise addition to the MCU lineup turned into a smash hit. See what happened in the reboot of a reboot that actually managed to bring some new life to the web-slinger.
We start off in the past, specifically the aftermath of “the incident” when the aliens attacked New York in the Avengers. A salvage crew is cleaning up the alien debris from the attack when their job is shut down by Damage Control. This essentially puts them out of work for good, but they decide to put some of the alien tech they squirreled away to good use and turn to a life of crime.
Flash forward eight years to the events of Civil War, and we see Peter’s involvement from his perspective, via a video diary. Iron Man drops him off at home afterward with his new upgraded spider suit and tells him they will call when he’s needed. Months go by with Spider Man waiting for the call, taking care of small crimes around Queens until he runs into some bank robbers with fancy tech. He thwarts the robbery, but a local business is destroyed in the process. He returns home and his buddy Ned catches him changing out of the suit, discovering his identity.
After Ned brags that Peter knows Spider Man the two are invited to a party, with the plan to have Spider Man make an appearance as well. But when Peter puts on the suit he sees an explosion in the distance and goes to check it out, only to find high tech weapons dealers. He pursues them but is attacked by the Vulture and dropped into a lake. Iron Man saves him and tells him to back off, but Peter won’t take it. He finds a piece of tech that got lost during the chase and pockets it.
Peter and Ned investigate the tech at school the following day, trying to find out what it is, but the salvage crew shows up looking for it. Peter is able to put a tracker on them and traces them to Maryland, so he follows under the guise of a school trip. In the process he and Ned manage to disable the tracker in Peter’s suit to keep Iron Man from shutting him down, and they remove a few restrictions Stark put on the suit, unlocking its onboard AI, which Peter names Karen. He goes through some growing pains with the suit’s additional features, but ends up managing to thwart a new heist from the salvage crew, stopping them from stealing a shipment from Damage Control. Unfortunately in the process he is trapped in the transport truck and knocked out.
Peter wakes up in the Damage Control secure facility to find out he’s been locked in over night. He takes some time to get used to the suit and discovers that the tech he was investigating, that is now in Ned’s possession, is actually an alien power core, and is explosive when exposed to radiation. He races back to his friend, visiting the Washington monument, but he’s too late and the device explodes, causing serious damage to the elevator his school academic team is in. He races up the monument and manages to break in at the last minute to save their lives.
Back in New York, Peter asks Karen to help him find more information about the salvage crew, leading him to one of their clients and information on a deal going down on the Staten Island Ferry. He sees the Vulture unmasked and tries to catch the crew, but in the process one of the devices malfunctions and the ferry is cut in half. He almost manages to save it, but fails. Fortunately Iron Man shows up to help him out, before chewing him out and taking his suit away from him. Devastated Peter returns home and tries to adjust to a normal life. He even asks the girl he likes out to the homecoming dance.
Unfortunately, when Peter goes to pick her up he’s greeted at the door by the Vulture, who turns out to be the girl’s father. Over an awkward car ride the Vulture figures out that Peter is Spider Man, and he warns him to back off, letting him live in return for saving his daughter’s life in DC. Peter just can’t let it go, and leaves his phone in the car so he can track the Vulture back to his lair, and takes off in pursuit. He tries to call in Iron Man, but Happy is busy moving the Avenger’s stuff to their new base and doesn’t have time for him. After a brief confrontation the Vulture drops a building on him and leaves him for dead, off for a huge job. Peter manages to pull himself out and realizes that he’s going after the Avenger’s shipment. He manages to catch up to them just in time to climb onto the outside of the plane to try to fight off the Vulture. In the process they bring the plane down, and he ends up saving the Vulture’s life and leaving him tied up for the authorities.
Iron Man is pleased with Peter’s progress and offers him a new suit and a place on the Avengers, but Peter decides he still has a lot to learn and turns him down. He comes back home to find his original Stark suit waiting for him.
Meanwhile a jailed Vulture proves his gratitude by refusing to admit that he knows Spider Man’s secret identity.
