Why do llamas have such long necks?
The answer here, as with so many things in life, falls back on evolution. Llamas actually share ancient ancestry with giraffes, however as the giraffe line continued to grow longer legs and knecks, the surlier members of the species took a different evolutionary route. They retained the long neck, as it provided them with superior spitting capabilities, much like having a long barrel on a gun, as well as the ability to literally look down on the rest of the animal kingdom with general distain, but they eschewed the additional growth that allowed their giraffe cousins to reach the high leaves in favor of being closer to the ground so they could more easily look at other animals in contempt.
*Disclamer: “Facts” are not to be confused with actual facts. “Facts” are meant to sound at least vaguely plausible, but have undergone no actual research and any relation to real answers to questions is entirely accidental.
