Things heat up as the hunt for Kilgrave continues.
Jessica and Luke bond over their shared secrets, both in discussion of their powers and in the bedroom, but Jessica is hesitant to tell Luke about the only other powered individual she’s met, worried that Luke won’t believe that someone can control minds, a fear he confirms. She encounters the picture in Luke’s medicine cabinet again, and Luke tells her that his ex-wife died in a bus crash. Jessica, unable to bring herself to tell him that she already knows, feels guilty about her involvement and leaves.
Hearing a lot of negative chatter about Hope on the radio, Jessica approaches both Jeri and Trish asking for help in turning the tide of public opinion, hoping that if people believe the story others will come forward with their own testimony about Kilgrave. In the meantime she sets about getting her hands on a batch of the anesthetic drug that she hopes will put Kilgrave down. Trish admits that she can’t do anything to help with that, but does consider doing what she can to help Hope. In the process Jessica sees that Trish is covered in bruises and is told that since she left Trish has spent time learning to protect herself, both through improving her home defense systems and through martial arts training.
With her avenues for obtaining the needed drug running dry, Jessica resorts to using neighbor Malcom’s drug addict status as a distraction at a local hospital, literally throwing him at one of the nurses to cause a scene and stealing a few syringes of the drug in the process but also betraying his trust in someone he considered to be a good person.
With help from Hogarth, Trish is able to get Hope on her radio show, live from the prison, to tell her story. This puts Jessica on edge, terrified about what will happen when Kilgrave hears, but Trish is adamant that it is the only way to turn the narrative. During the show Hogarth indicates that she doesn’t believe that Kilgrave’s mind control is real, effectively throwing Hope under the bus and forcing Trish to step up to defend her herself, and in the process seriously insult Kilgrave. This gets his attention, and with a chilling phone-in to the show, he casually threatens her life. Now paranoid that Kilgrave could send anyone after her, Trish accidentally attacks a fan while leaving the radio station.
Back at her apartment Trish is approached by an officer asking about the assault, and though she is hesitant to trust him, she sees no choice but to let him in. He immediately begins to try to kill her, on orders from Kilgrave, and unfortunately her training is not enough to fight him off. Fortunately Jessica arrives just in time to save her life and fights him off long enough to inject some of the anesthetic into Trish to fake her death, sending Officer Simpson off to report back to Kilgrave, but not before Jessica slips a phone into his pocket to track his location.
Following Simpson back to Kilgrave’s stolen apartment Jessica prepares the sleeping drug, ready to take him down, but Kilgrave orders Simpson to jump off the roof. Jessica locks eyes with Kilgrave, and remembers the last time she saw him, as he orders her to kill Luke’s ex-wife right before he was hit by the bus. In the time it takes for Jessica to stop the officer’s suicide, Kilgrave runs off, leaving the apartment’s inhabitants to slow Jessica down and keep her off his tail. She finds that he’s had surveillance on her for some time, with pictures of her covering one of the rooms and pouring out of a printer. She takes Simpson to the alley next to the building to convince him that he followed Kilgrave’s orders and jumped, and tells him to go home and forget about everything that happened to him.
Jessica returns to Luke’s place, still unable to admit her part in the death of his wife, but unable to continue a relationship with him while holding on to that secret.
