Jessica Jones, surly alcoholic misanthrope and private detective, finds herself reliving old trauma when she discovers that Kilgrave, a man with mind control powers, is back in town. He held her captive with his ability for months before she managed to break free, leaving him for dead after he was hit by a bus. Now that he’s back, he seems determined to make her pay for abandoning him, but she’s still not entirely over her first experience with him. His first major act is to have a young woman, Hope, kill her own parents.

Jessica forms a brief relationship with Luke Cage, husband of a woman that Kilgrave made her murder, the event that finally freed her. She learns that, like her, Luke has super human abilities, but holding the secret of his wife’s death forces Jessica to keep her distance despite her growing feelings.

Jessica and Kilgrave play an increasingly dangerous game of cat and mouse as she tries to find a way to neutralize his ability and prove that it exists so she can exonerate Hope. This puts Jessica in contact with Will Simpson, a police officer and former special operations soldier. With help from him, and from her old friend and adopted sister Trish Walker, Jessica sets up a safe containment unit for Kilgrave. They briefly capture him, but he is able to escape, and begins to punish Jessica more directly.

In order to stop the killing around her, Jessica turns herself over to him, living with him for a while as he promises not to control her. She tries, unsuccessfully, to rehabilitate him, but unconvinced that it will work in the long run manages instead to catch him off guard and lock him up. In the process she derails Simpson’s own attempt to kill Kilgrave.

With Kilgrave captive, Jessica tries to get the proof that she needs to clear Hope’s name, and tracks down Kilgrave’s parents to provoke him into using his powers. It works, and they catch him on camera, but due to interference from Jessica’s lawyer and co-conspirator Hogarth, looking to use Kilgrave’s power for her own purposes, he is able to kill his mother and escape again. In the process, Jessica comes to realize that she is no longer susceptible to Kilgrave’s influence.

Kilgrave arranges for Hope’s release from prison, planning to exchange Hope for his father, but things don’t go according to plan. Hope kills herself, freeing Jessica to kill Kilgrave herself, but Jessica is too busy saving innocent lives to stop Kilgrave from escaping with his father.

Simpson continues to obsess over finding and killing Kilgrave himself, and comes to see Jessica as his main obstacle in completing his mission. He rejoins his old black-ops group and begins taking combat enhancement medication, making him incredibly strong, but increasingly erratic. He nearly manages to kill her, before Trish arrives and takes some of the meds herself, giving her and Jessica the edge. The medication puts Trish in the hospital, but she is able to recover.

Kilgrave then forces his father to use the cells of Hope’s unborn child to enhance his abilities, hoping to again control Jessica. Instead he ends up controlling Luke, and orders him to kill Jessica. He very nearly succeeds, and is only stopped with a shotgun blast to the face. Luke barely survives, and is out for the count when Kilgrave gets his last power upgrade and calls Jessica out to the docks for a final showdown. She is able to convince him that she is under his control and gets close enough to snap his neck, putting an end to the nightmare.
