Daredevil S1:E7 Stick

Simple Synopsis

An important figure from Matt’s past returns on an important mission.

Somewhere in Japan a blind man goes on a killing spree looking for answers, and is directed to New York.

Owlsly meets up with the Japanese conspirators looking to make a side alliance in case things go south with Fisk, but is rebuffed. Before he can leave the meeting place he is ambushed by Daredevil. Unfortunately, Matt is distracted and tased before he can get any information out of Owlsly and the accountant escapes. The source of the distraction is revealed to be the other blind man.

We then flash back to Matt’s childhood, soon after the death of his father, and learn that the other blind man, Stick, also has the advanced senses that Matt has. He decides to train Matt to control and use his abilities, and to train him to fight so that he will be ready for a coming war.

In the present, an angry Matt is surprised and displeased to see his old mentor again. We learn that Stick abandoned him as a child, and disapproves of relationships in general. He tells Matt that he has gotten too soft, that he needs to shed his comfortable lifestyle if he wants to really make a difference, and that he needs to be willing to kill. He tells Matt that the leader of the Japanese criminals working with Fisk, a man named Nobu, is shipping a powerful weapon called the Black Sky into the city, and asks Matt to come along with him to help stop it and in the process deal a blow to Fisk’s organization while helping Stick in his eternal war. Matt agrees to help as long as Stick promises not to kill anyone in the process.

Meanwhile, Karen continues to follow up on the story by interviewing Mrs. Candenas, but is set upon by the thugs that damaged the old woman’s apartment. With Foggy’s help she is able to fight them off and the two flee.

At the docks, Matt and Stick arrive in time to witness the delivery of the Black Sky, and Matt is shocked to find out that it is a young boy. Stick tries to kill the child, but Matt intercepts and saves him, leading to a fight with Nobu’s men while others escape with the boy.

Back in the past, Matt admits to Stick that he has come to see him as a surrogate father figure. Worried that the boy’s feelings will become a liability for both of them, Stick announces that he can no longer train him, and leaves.

Returning to his apartment in the present, Matt finds Stick waiting for him, and confronts him about trying to kill the boy. He tells Stick that he won’t let him kill the boy, but Stick replies that it is already done. The two fight, trashing Matt’s apartment, and Matt eventually fights the old man to a standstill. Stick takes his leave, leaving his weapons behind for Matt’s use.

Karen takes Foggy back to Urich’s office and they fill him in on their investigation, and they speculate on the relationship between the Kingpin and the man in black.

In the wreckage of his apartment, Matt finds proof that Stick actually cared about him all along. Meanwhile, somewhere else a man asks Stick if Matt will be ready when the time comes, but Stick has no idea.
