The new season starts off appropriately named.
With Wilson Fisk behind bars, Daredevil continues to stalk the streets thwarting crime and Nelson and Murdock have gained a reputation as the go-to law firm of the little guy. Despite their popularity they are facing financial ruin, since most of their clients can’t actually pay, but they are trying to get by. Foggy has grown more or less accepting of Matt’s night life choices, realizing that he won’t stop what he is doing, but worries about the possible ramifications on both Matt and on the firm.
But not all is well in Hell’s Kitchen. With Fisk gone, the various crime families and gangs are all fighting to pick up the pieces of his empire, rushing to fill the power vacuum he left behind. One of these groups, the Italian mob, has a meeting to discuss how to gain control, but before they get far they are all gunned down in a storm of bullets, leaving only one survivor. The man, Grotto, tracks down Matt, Foggy, and Karen at Josie’s Bar and asks them to take his case, offering to turn evidence against anyone he can just to get witness protection out of fear that whoever killed everyone else will still be after him. Before they can make a decision he passes out from his wounds. Karen rushes Grotto to the hospital while Matt and Foggy start to investigate the shoot out.
When they get there they learn that multiple groups have been hit recently by what seems to be a new para-military group in town, packing heavy ammunition. The cops are worried about this small army that has moved into town, and have no idea what their motives or agendas could be. Matt and Foggy split up as Matt decides to look for answers as Daredevil, and Foggy goes to visit an old friend in the Dogs of Hell biker gang that was recently hit.
Daredevil pumps Turk for information and is led to a warehouse in the meat packing district that is owned by the cartel, and supposedly houses a large shipment of weapons. When he gets there he finds nearly everyone dead, and is told that there is no stopping the one that did it. He also finds out that the small army is just one man, and begins to fear that Karen might not be safe with Grotto. Meanwhile Foggy nearly gets killed by the bikers, and learns that his friend is dead, killed by the same “small army”, but that they don’t know who it was.
At the hospital, Grotto comes too after his collapse and freaks out about being in the system, but is mollified when Karen tells him they used a fake name. He’s still terrified that someone is after them, though, and his fears are justified as a man with a large shotgun stalks the halls of the hospital and starts firing at them. They are barely able to make their escape, dodging bullets around corners and make it to Karen’s car, but the man then trails a sniper rifle at them. He is nearly able to take out Grotto, but the gun is pushed aside at the last second when Daredevil arrives. The two fight it out as the man tries to escape, and Daredevil catches up to him, only to take a bullet to the head, knocking him off the side of the roof they are on.
