Daredevil S1:E1 Into the Ring

Simple Synopsis

Diving into the first of the acclaimed Netflix Marvel series, Daredevil, and true to form it starts off strong.

At the scene of an accident, a man finds his young son, Matt Murdock, injured after saving a man’s life. The accident has caused spillage of toxic chemicals which leak into Matt’s eyes, leaving the boy blind.

As an adult, Matt has become a lawyer, but he’s been pushed to the limit with the crime and injustice plaguing his city. Despite his blindness, Matt’s other senses have been greatly enhanced, so he takes his fight to the streets, freeing a group of girls from a ring of sex traffickers.

The next morning Matt’s partner, Foggy Nelson, bribes an old frenemy on the police force, Officer Brett Mahoney, to look out for tips on possible clients before meeting Matt and a realtor as they finally open their new law firm. They argue a bit about their approach to finding paying clients, while across town a woman with a bloody knife in her hand cries over a body and proclaims her innocence as the cops bust in.

A tip from Mahoney has Nelson and Murdock meet with the woman, Karen Page. She claims that the victim, Daniel Fisher, worked with her at Union Allied. She asked him out for drinks, and woke up laying in his blood. She begs them to believe her, and Matt listens to her heartbeat, his own lie detector, and determines that she’s innocent. When she says she doesn’t have any money Foggy is ready to leave, but Matt insists that they will help her.

A man eating lunch in a park is approached by another man in a smart suit. The suited man brings up the other man’s debt, and indicates that his daughter’s life is in danger if he does not follow the suited man’s employer’s instructions.

As Matt and Foggy discuss possible actions in Karen’s case, Karen finds herself being attacked in her prison cell, but Mr. Farnum, the man in the park. He attempts to strangle her, but she is able to fight him off. Matt and Foggy are able to use the incident to get Karen out of jail, but are wondering why the ADA failed to bring charges in the first place, suspecting that there is more to the case that someone did not want seeing the light of day.

At their offices, Karen admits that her job as a secretary in the finance department at Union Allied led to her seeing proof of some massive embezzlement in the pension fund. The dead man in her apartment worked in the legal department, and she asked him out to tell him about what she had found. The next thing she knew they were drugged and he was dead. She worries that the same will happen to Matt and Foggy, but agrees to let them try to keep her safe, and to stay at Matt’s for the night. Once there they discuss Matt’s blindness, and he asks her if she kept a copy of the pension fund. She tells him she didn’t, but he can tell she is lying.

On a dark rooftop, a group of criminals meet: the Russian brothers: Anatoly and Vladimir, the accountant Leland, the Japanese man Nobu, and the mysterious Madame Gao. They are joined by the suited man, speaking for his employer. He asks the Russians why their last shipment was light, and they blame the new vigilante. Leland sees it as an opportunity, but the suited man is concerned. The Union Allied situation is brought up as another concern, but the suited man declares that it is being handled.

With Matt presumably asleep, Karen sneaks out of his apartment to return home for the pension file, but is met by a hired killer. Fortunately, Matt follows in his vigilante garb and faces off with the assassin. He is hurt during the fight, but memories of his father keep him going. He is able to defeat the killer and take back the file. Karen convinces him that he can’t trust the police, so they take the file to the press.

With the information in the public, the suited man makes arrangements for his employer to close up remaining loose ends, the hired killer is put away for the death of the man found in Karen’s apartment, and Karen is let off the hook. Karen’s boss takes the fall for Union Allied and commits a forced suicide.

Karen, appreciative of Matt and Foggy’s support, makes them a meal, and decides to join the firm as their secretary, providing much needed help.

Matt visits his father’s old gym, training for future battle, as the criminals tie up loose ends, killing Farnum and the assassin, and continue on with their plans, a crime wave sweeping the city.

On a rooftop, Matt the vigilante hears the kidnapping of a young boy, and leaps into action.
