Past and present come together as a new plan falls into place.
Looking back at Jessica before she met Kilgrave, we see her similarly anti-social, but mostly just bored of her jobs, but already showing the skills for her future work as a PI. She uses her strength to scare off a guy hassling Trish, and Trish tries to convince her she should be a hero.
In the present, Jessica considers the damage meeting Kilgrave can do to a person, as they discover that Malcom only became a junkie after he started being controlled. She starts following him to find out how and where he is meeting with Kilgrave, and realizes that the location is always set at the last minute. She goes to Trish to help her set up a plan, and discovers her new relationship with Simpson, who wants in. Jess and Simpson clash and don’t trust each other, but she admits he could be helpful.
In the past, another dead end job ends up offering Jessica a chance to be a hero when she stops a car from running over a little girl. She begins to seriously consider it as an option, but rejects Trish’s attempts at naming her and providing a costume.
Simpson uses his military training to set up an operation that will have him hitting Kilgrave with an anesthetic dart gun so Jessica can haul him off to a van and Trish can drive them to an abandoned CDC bunker where they should be able to safely store Kilgrave. He wants to just kill him and be done with it, but Jessica insists that they take him alive so Hope can be cleared. Hope, meanwhile, begs Jessica for money in prison, but won’t say why.
When it comes time to enact the plan they are nearly successful, but are attacked by unexpected bodyguards. They are still able to down Kilgrave and drive off with him, but a tracker lets the bodyguards find their location. Trish is tazed and out quickly, while Simpson and Jessica fight off the guards, but they are unable to stop them from taking Kilgrave away to safety. Realizing that they can’t get any useful information out of remaining guard, Jessica sends Simpson away to cool off and returns home, with Trish upset that she wasn’t more useful.
Jessica finds Malcom trying to purchase more drugs but not having the money after the failed drop, and chases away his dealer. Malcom tells her that she can’t save him again, and Jessica realizes that he was the last person she saved, fighting off a pair of muggers that were planning to kill him. That fight was the one that caught Kilgrave’s attention, and led to him controlling her in the first place. She tells him he’s right, that she can’t save him, he has to decide to save himself, and offers him the drugs he wants.
Kilgrave wakes up, bruised from the ordeal and exhilarated. He calls Jessica and promises not to mess with Malcom any more, if she agrees to send him pictures herself. She is disgusted by the idea, but seeing that Malcom chose not to stay on the drugs, she gives in for his sake.
Meanwhile, in prison, Hope is brutally attacked.
