Another day, another disaster. But this one brings Jessica to her lowest point yet.
Kilgrave stalks around Jessica’s apartment, taking a look around in the dark, when she gets a visit from Ruben. Jessica herself is getting wasted as hard as possible in the aftermath of her confession to Luke, but is still busy trying to get Wendy to sign the divorce papers for Jeri. In her drunken, upset state of mind she takes things a bit too far, accidentally dropping Wendy on the subway tracks and barely managing to rescue her before the train arrives, a train that Jess nearly decides could mean an end to her Kilgrave troubles for good.
Malcom arrives back at the apartment building after a morning run to find Jessica passed out in the elevator and follows her upstairs, where the two discover Ruben’s dead body lying in Jessica’s bed. This sends her over the edge, and into a desperate plan to get herself locked away in the Supermax prison in the hopes that Kilgrave will come after her and be forced to expose his powers in the process, or that at the very least she’ll be out of the equation and no one else will die because of her. Malcom tries to talk her out of it, but she’s determined to follow through, and hits the town to tie up loose ends before she gets sent away.
Trish and Simpson continue to enjoy their new relationship, but Trish lets slip that she may have a lead on finding Kilgrave’s new location, having managed to hunt down his replacement security detail.
Jessica hunts down Jeri to demand that she act as her lawyer when she contacts the police that evening, but won’t fill her in on the plan or what has happened. She follows up by attempting to find and apologize again to Luke, but he’s left town. She also stops by to see Trish’s mother, to let her know that even behind bars, she won’t allow her to get anywhere near Trish.
Meanwhile, Wendy approaches Hogarth, furious about having Jessica set on her, and threatens to expose Jeri’s darker deeds to have her disbarred if she doesn’t comply with giving her a much larger share of the assets in the divorce.
Simpson tails the bodyguards for Trish, tracking down Kilgrave, but lies to Trish about finding him, continuing to stake him out without her knowledge. Trish, at Malcom’s request, goes to Jessica’s place and learns about Ruben and Jessica’s plan. She again tries to talk Jessica out of what she’s doing and covers for Malcom as he goes to the river to dump Ruben’s body. Jessica catches up just as he is leaving and dives in to remove Ruben’s head, and takes off for the police station to meet with Detective Clemens, confessing to the murder.
As Jessica tries to convince Clemens that she needs to be sent to the high security prison, Hogarth shows up to defend her but Jessica changes her mind when she realizes she may not go to jail and fires her. Moments later, after demonstrating her strength for Clemens, Officer Mahoney comes in to tell her she’s free to go. Assuming that Hogarth is behind it she storms out to the main office, only to find everyone pointing guns at each other. Kilgrave greets her and Clemens and congratulates her on her moxie, but points out that spies are easy for him to get, and that he was having her followed.
Kilgrave then admits that he had Ruben killed because he was annoying, and interrupted him while he was leaving her a present. He also confesses that everything he has done has been because he loves Jessica, and wants to help her understand him. He also tells her that he has no intention of trying to control her again. She’s the first person that has ever walked away from him, the only thing he hasn’t been able to have, and it fascinates him. He erases the security footage from the precinct and tells everyone there that everything they’ve seen or heard was a joke, allowing the both of them to simply leave, and tells her that when she’s ready, he’ll see her at home.
Jessica races back to her apartment and desperately searches for Kilgrave’s gift, discovering one of her old diaries. In the morning she packs up to leave, assuming it will be for good, and encounters an incredibly upset Robyn, trying to find her lost brother. Her anger and confusion nearly brings Jessica to tears with guilt. She leaves and takes a taxi back to her old house where Kilgrave meets her and invites her in, with Simpson secretly watching.
