Jessica Jones S1:E9 AKA Sin Bin

Simple Synopsis

The tables turn with Kilgrave locked in a cell, but Jessica still needs proof if she’s going to keep Hope out of jail.

Kilgrave wakes up inside the hermetically sealed room that Simpson set up, finding it flooded with the videos of his childhood projected on the wall. She lets him know that the button on her desk can be used to send electric shocks through the water if he gets uppity.

Meanwhile, Trish rushes Simpson to the local hospital, the only survivor of the blast. He insists on being taken to a doctor Koslov.

Hogarth arrives at the CDC facility to tell Jessica that she’s running out of time, and that Hope is being offered a plea deal. She also warns her that any confession made under duress won’t be admissible in court, so the only thing that would work would be if Jessica can get video proof of Kilgrave’s powers with a legal witness. Jess leaves Hogarth watching Kilgrave while she tries to get Clements to be that witness, but he doesn’t believe her. Kilgrave attempts to convince Hogarth that his powers can be used for good, possibly to solve the problem with Wendy, but she’s not convinced.

Simpson, barely stable, begs Trish to take the gun he gave her and finish Kilgrave, knowing that Jessica won’t do it. When Koslov arrives he tells the doctor that he wants back in, and Trish is shuffled out of the room.

Jessica rushes back to the facility, intent on getting video proof of Kilgrave’s ability, even if it’s just enough to convince Clements. She has Hogarth man the shock switch and goes in to the room herself and begins taunting and beating him, but he refuses to try controlling her. She nearly kills him before Hogarth throws the switch.

Trish and Jessica review the video and try to figure out what to do next, chancing on the idea of looking for Kilgrave’s parents while Pam begs Hogarth to take a stronger position against Wendy.

Hogarth presents the plea deal to Hope as Jessica manages to track down the names and pictures of Kilgrave’s parents. Hope calls her to ask for advice, and Jessica convinces her that she is close to getting the evidence she needs. Jessica then realizes that she recognizes Kilgrave’s mother from the support group.

Gathering up the support group members for a meeting Jessica confirms that the woman is the one she is seeking. She scares her off, but follows her home after a short argument with Malcom, discovering that both of the parents are there in town after hearing the news about Hope’s murders, having connected them to their son. Jessica convinces them to come with her to try to stop him, and they come along willingly, claiming that his version of his childhood was a lie, and that they were also prisoners of his power.

Hogarth returns to the facility to relieve Trish and decides to reopen negotiations with Kilgrave, planning to release him in exchange for help with Wendy, but Jessica returns with the parents before she can open the door. Officer Clements arrives a moment later, having received the beat-down video Jess sent him and come to arrest her, but Trish gets the drop on him and he is handcuffed to a pipe and forced to play witness. They send Kilgrave’s parents into the sealed room, expecting him to be unable to resist using his powers against them, despite the cameras and Clements watching. He nearly does, but his mother stabs him with a pair of scissors, trying to undo her mistake. When he orders her to stab herself with them and she starts to do so Jessica has the proof that she needs, but finds that the shock switch no longer works, having been deactivated by Hogarth.

Kilgrave’s mother dies from multiple stab wounds while Jessica tells everyone to get out and rushes to get into the room. Kilgrave orders his father to carve out his own heart, and realizing that Jessica won’t get in in time Trish pulls her gun and shoots out the glass, shooting Kilgrave in the arm in the process. Jessica rushes into the room and wrestles to get the scissors away from the father as Kilgrave rushes out through the broken glass, ordering Trish to put a bullet in her head and Clements to follow him. The Officer breaks his hand getting out of the handcuffs and chases after, but Jessica gets out of the room ahead of him. Kilgrave orders her to let him go, but it has no effect and he is trapped until Clements catches up and is ordered to get her off of him. Jessica chases Kilgrave out of the building, but he is gone.

Despite the disastrous setback Jessica smiles with the realization that she no longer has to worry about Kilgrave controlling her.
